There are many ways you can work to improve your vision. This is not something that you should take for granted and should do all that you can in order to maintain it and allow you to be able to protect it.

Why Protect Your Eyes

Apart from feet and hand, the third part of the body which we always to tend to take for granted is our eyes. Eyes as we all know are the most important part of our body and it needs extreme care and protection for unhindered and trouble free during our entire life cycle. The importance of eyes can be understood only by those who are the unfortunate victims of blindness. Hence, we should thank god that we have been given the perfect pair of eyes which we should take care regularly.

While we take the trouble of checking our heart, lungs, kidney, liver and other important organs of the body, we sometimes neglect our eyes. This is very wrong and it could lead to some serious problems at a later stage in life. Hence, it is always better to have your eyes checked up by a good eye-specialist at least once in 6 months. You may not be knowing, but your eyes could be under lot of stress and strain. The doctor would be the best person to find out whether you would need to go in for spectacles to cure your eye-sight problems or not. Hence, never make the mistake of taking the eye for granted.

Eating the right kind of foods rich in vitamins and minerals is extremely important for the health of your eyes. Add green leafy vegetables to your diet daily as these are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals so essential for your eyes. Further, if you are working on the computer, ensure that the monitor is protected by a proper anti-radiation screen, because the radiation generated by the computer monitor could be very damaging to your eyes. If you are watching TV always keep a safe distance between you and the TV. People, especially children have the habit of watching TV from very close quarters which should be avoided at all costs.

Apart from the above, there are some other tips like regular washing of the eyes, giving the eyes some simple exercise, which will help keep you eyes in shape.

History of Lasik

When considering Lasik surgery you might wonder how the procedure came about. When did they begin studying? How long have they been doing this procedure? There was a lot of research that lead up to the type of surgeries being performed today.

The idea of refractive surgeries has been around for about 100 years. Over this time, the ideas have improved and developed. The original ideas began in European countries. Japaneese doctor, Dr. Tutomu Sato came up with the idea of cutting the cornea, but it was from the inside of the eye, in the 1930′s. It was not until the 1970′s when a Russian doctor began his research of cutting the cornea from the outside of the eye.

It was an accident that began this Russian doctor’s research. When a young nearsighted boy fell his glasses broke and a piece of glass cut his eye, shaving off the outer layer of the eye. Instead of doing damage, this accident caused his vision to improve. Dr. Fyodorov began studying this and published his findings. In his procedures, he would make cuts either long or short to improve eye sight. American doctors then began researching his idea.

There are many people that can be credited in the research that lead up to Lasik. Jose Ignacio Barraquer is known as the “father of modern refractive surgery”. His work began around 1949. What he did was either add or remove tissue from the cornea to change its shape in order to bend the light for the patients to see better.

The modern Lasik surgeries began around the 1980′s when Ioannis Pallikaris began the first animal tests of this procedure. In his surgeries he did not remove the entire top layer of the eye, but instead created a flap.

Since the take off of Lasik there have been over 30 million treatments. This number makes Lasik the most common voluntary procedure in the medical field.

Eyecare Should Include a Little Pampering

Most people take their vision for granted. Seeing an eye doctor, or ophthalmologist, for frequent check-ups is wise for you and your children. Following a basic principle of alternative medicine like the idea that prevention is better than treatment, if possible, can keep your children’s vision in optimal working condition, so that you don’t have to worry. Eyecare No-Nos: What to Avoid for Healthy Vision

Some things that cause damage to your eyes, and therefore your vision, are obvious. Everyone knows getting poked in the eye is bad, for example. But there are smaller things that many people do habitually that can cause damage to your vision as well, like staring. Staring is something you may think you never do, but you may be surprised. Pay attention to how often you blink while watching TV, playing video games, or typing on the computer. You just might find that you forget to blink sometimes. Blinking provides a brief rest and needed moisture to the eye, and is important, so you want to avoid staring for long periods of time. But staring and forgetting to blink is only one less obvious activity to avoid for optimal vision.

Avoid rubbing your eyes too aggressively. Be gentle with your eyes; they’re delicate. Rubbing too hard can rupture blood vessels. Avoid reading under inadequate lighting. Low lighting can cause your eyes to have some trouble focusing on the page in front of you. This means that you could be reading for sustained periods with out of focus eye lenses. This tension makes your eyes work harder, harming the vision and adding unnecessary strain.

To keep your vision healthy, it’s a good idea to protect your eyes from light – both from the sun and artificial light and avoid overexposure. Wear sunglasses at all times when daylight is present, even if it is cloudy and doesn’t seem sunny. Harmful UV rays pierce through cloud cover and harm the eyes, so invest in UV protection sunglasses as an eyecare precaution. Light bulbs can be damaging to your vision, too, so try to avoid quick adjustments between light intensities, like driving at night, when feasible.

If at all possible, try to avoid stress. Sometimes the things you want to avoid for your general health, like smoking or drugs, are bad for eye health as well. Stress can exacerbate any medical issue, including eye strain and even more harmful conditions. Be aware of your stress and try to limit the tension in your mind and body.
